Air pollution sourced from motor vehicles in Erzurum

11 SUMMARY Air pollution is that when pollutants are high in density and in duration as to give harm to men, animals, plants and things that are important for us. The main reason of air pollution is human activities. Especially motor vehicles are accepted as the main source of air pollution. The comfort that the technology provide people with and the lack of time make the motor vehicles an indecpensable part of our life. As a result of this, in Erzurum like in all the other cities the number of motor vehicles is increasing day by day. With the increase of vehicle number, vehicle queues occure on the ways especially on the signalized junctions. Because of the geographical position of Erzurum the winters are cold and long. Also because of the high altitude, in winters the average heat is low and besides that the percantage of O2 falls to 16,5. This causes incomplate combustion both in the stationary combustion processes and in the motor engines. As a result of this the amount of the pollutants like HC and CO are increasing. In winters on the streets, not having air circulation and surrounded by high buildings, pollutants coming from both stationary combustion processes and motor vehicles become so dense that it can be seen by naked eyes. In this study, the effects of the geographical position and meteorologycal pecularities of Erzurum on the pollutants emitted by motor vehicles are examined. For this purpose, the exhaust gases emission measurements of 30370 motor vehicles, made in various months and years, are inspected statistically. The main result of this statistical analyses is that the pollutants like CO and HC are rising the maximum concentration in winters. An other important result is that the vehicles with converter are making less pollution than the vehicles without converters.
