Evaluation of trace elements in essential thrombocytosis and reactive thrombocytosis

Introduction: Essential thrombocytosis (ET), is a clonal stem cell disorder and one of the chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by a significant increase in the platelet levels. The present study aimed to investigate the role of trace elements in acquired clonal thrombocytosis and the role of this disorder on the levels of trace elements. Patients were evaluated with reactive thrombocytosis based on the levels of trace elements on healthy group. Material and Methods: Individuals were categorized as patients with ET diagnosis (Group1-n=30), patients with reactive thrombocytosis secondary to iron deficiency anemia (Group 2- n=30) and healthy controls (Group 3-n=30). Aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), boron (B), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), magnesium (Mg), manganese ( Mn), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), silicon (Si) levels were analyzed by ICP-OES instrument. Results: The comparision between three groups for trace elements showed that Al (p<0,001), Zn (p=0,02), Fe (p<0,001), Co (p=0,01), Mg (p=0,01), Mn (p<0,001), Ni (p<0,001), Se (p<0,001), Si (p<0,001) were significant. Mg (p=0,02), Mn (p<0,001), Ni (p<0,001), Co (p=0,04) were notably higher and Si (p=0,04) were notably lower in group-1 than group-2. Mn (p=0,02), Ni (p=0,001) Co (p=0,02) were significantly higher and Se (p<0,001), Si (p<0,001), Al (p<0,001) were significantly lower in group-1 than group-3. Additionally, Se (p<0,001), Mg (p=0,009), Fe (p<0,001), Al (p<0,001), Zn (p=0,02) were notably lower group-2 than group-3. Follow up time in ET was corelated significantly for Ni (p=0,023; r = 0,41) and Si (p=0,04; r=-0,36). Conclusion: This study with higher levels and lower levels of trace elements (Se, Si, Al, Mg, Mn, Ni, Zn, Co, Fe) showed that essential elements may be rolled in mechanisms of causes or complications on ET. Further spesific studies about this topic will provide valuable contributions to the understanding of the ethiopathogenesis and prognosis on ET.
