Examining the mathematical modeling processes of middle school students in an interactive simulation environment

Abstract (EN)

Interactive simulations are effective tools in modeling activities as they allow users to observe system behaviors by manipulating parameters. Despite the various opportunities provided by simulations, such as model creation and testing, modeling activities are predominantly conducted in non-technological environments. This study aims to examine the modeling processes in a simulation environment. To achieve this goal, a qualitative research method, specifically a case study, was employed. The participants of the study consisted of four 7th-grade students (one male, three females) attending different public schools. The research data were collected through audio and video recordings as well as interviews. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis method. According to the research findings, simulations play a significant role in accessing and comprehending data, transferring mathematical results to real-life situations, and facilitating the replication of modeling processes when needed. Furthermore, interactive simulations were found to contribute to students' positive attitudes towards mathematics in general, particularly in the context of mathematical modeling processes. Based on these results, it is evident that interactive simulations have significant potential in modeling processes and are recommended for wider usage.
