TITLE OF THE THESIS MSC THESIS SİNAN NAMLI BOLU ABANT IZZET BAYSAL UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF GRADUATE STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF POULTRY SCIENCE (SUPERVISOR:ASSIST. PROF. DR. SABRI ARDA ERATALAR) BOLU, JUNE 2022 XI + 21 Chicken meat production and consumption has increased both around the world and in our country in recent years, and the annual chicken meat consumption per individual in Turkey has reached the level of 22 kg. In poultry farming, especially in broiler farming, the use of alternative and natural products to support development and reduce the stress and negative effects of rapid development, instead of performance enhancers used in the past, has increased and gained importance over the years. In this study, the effects of giving the extract of basil (Ocimum basilicum) dissolved in water to broilers with drinking water on performance and some meat quality parameters were investigated. The experimental setup was organized according to the randomized plots trial order, and they were divided into two groups as the control group with basil extract (F) and normal groundwater (K) control group. There were four experimental compartments in each group and a total of 96 chicks with 12 chicks in each compartment. It was planned in such a way that it formed the living material of the experiment. While the feed consumption, water consumption and feed conversion ratio were numerically close, there was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of live weight, and the basil consuming group was found to be heavier than the control group (P<0.05). In terms of meat quality parameters and carcass quality parameters, the differences between the groups in terms of hot and cold carcass weights, and the differences between the groups in terms of thigh meat, breast meat weights and edible internal organ weights were not statistically significant (P˃0.05). Likewise, the differences between the groups in terms of pH, water holding capacity and color were not statistically significant (P˃0.05). In this way, no harm was observed in the use of basil extract in broilers by giving it with drinking water. Considering its performance-enhancing effect, it is considered appropriate to use.
