Ender roles in housewives examining the impact on co-dependency and mental state

INTODUCTION AND AIM: There are roles and responsibilities that society assigns to women. These role responsibilities can affect women in terms of co-dependency and psychological aspects. The study was conducted to examine the relationship between gender role attitudes, mental state and co-dependency in housewives. METHOD AND MATERIAL: The study was conducted between December 15, 2022 and January 15, 2023 with the participation of 158 housewives attending Mother and Child Education Centers (AÇEM) in Pendik district of Istanbul. The data were collected using the "Personal Information Collection Form", "Gender Roles Attitude Scale", "General Health Survey-12" and "Co-dependency Determination Scale". Descriptive statistics, t and ANOVA tests, Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were used to analyze the factors affecting the dependent variable. FINDINGS: In the study, a statistically significant difference was found between TCRTÖ, EşBBÖ and GSA-12 scores according to some socio-demographic characteristics of housewives (p<0.05). A positive correlation was also found between the GSA-12 and the scale levels of the EşBBÖ / EşBBÖ and TCRTÖ. Participants' gender role attitudes had a positive effect on codependency (β=0.250, p=0.000). Participants' general health status also has a positive effect on codependency (β=0.350, p=0.000). CONCLUSION: Gender attitudes, co-dependency and general mental health status of women vary according to some sociodemographic characteristics. Gender attitudes and general health status of women are effective on co-dependency. These results are important for nurses working in the field of psychiatry to provide multidisciplinary care to women. Keywords: Women, Gender, Social Roles, Co-dependency, Mental Health
