The effects of married female teachers work-family conflict on work stress and performance

This research aimed to study the size of the conflict of the female teachers who are married and have children in their familial and professional lives; and to study the effects of this size on their professional performances and work stress. Survey form to get the information about the teachers who are participated in the research, the scale of work-family conflict developed by Netenmeyer, Boles and McMurrian (1996) to measure the conflict in their work and family lives, the scale of work stress developed by Acar and Zuhal Baltaş (2006) to measure the level of the stress in their work areas and the scale of the professional performance which its validity and the reliability was tested by the researcher benefited from the project `General Competences of Teaching? conducted by Ministry of Turkish Education to measure their professional performances were used.Totally 266 married female teachers who work in Fatih and Beyoğlu counties of İstanbul were participated in the research. The data was analysed with the statistics program SPSS 11.5. To analyse the data, percentage, frequency, average, standard deviation, correlation, simple linear regression, t test in non-related groups and one-way variance analysis were done.The results show that work-family conflict of married female teachers effects work stress. Teachers who teach 30-34 hours per week have higher work-family conflict; class teachers also have higher work-family conflict than branch teachers and the performance of teachers who have higher work stress declines. Furthermore the ages of teachers, work hours, graduation schools, having extra jobs, having children, the number of children and the types of looking after the children do not have any effects on their work-family conflict, work stress and professional performance.Key words: work-family conflict, work stress, performance, profession of teaching
