A sociological analysis on divorce and its reasons in the first years of marriage: The case of Bursa

The family union established by the decision of marriage ends with the decision of divorce. Especially in recent years, divorces have been increasing worldwide. In Turkey, it is observed that the divorce rates, which have increased rapidly in recent years, are especially between the first years of marriage, that is, between the years 1-5. In most of the studies prepared as a result of the literature review, the general divorce phenomenon and its causes have been discussed. Apart from a few studies on divorce and its causes in the first years of marriage, no data was available. For this reason, the main purpose of the research is to investigate the reasons for divorce in marriages that end in the first five years, which are the first years of marriage. In the study, the reasons for divorce were tried to be explained with the data obtained from the narratives of the participants, based on a conceptual and theoretical framework. Within the scope of the field research, in depth interviews were conducted with a total of 15 participants, 9 women and 6 men, who were divorced in the first years of marriage, residing in Bursa. Content analysis technique was used in the interpretation of the data. As a result, the data collected in line with the purpose of the research on the factors that cause the divorce processes of men and women were examined and categories were determined. In line with these categories, themes related to the process and causes of divorce were created. By examining the reasons that led the couples in the first years of marriage in Bursa to divorce, the factors that negatively affected the marriage and led to divorce were tried to be interpreted within the themes created.
