Abstract (EN)
Nowadays, the production of the electrical energy depends largely on fossil fuels. Concerning the residential load demand burden on the power system and greenhouse gas emissions caused by fossil fuels, the use of renewable energy sources like wind and solar energies in residential applications presents a great importance. It is known that the renewable energy sources are not harmful for the environment unlike fossil fuels. However, since the energy produced by such sources depends on weather conditions, the missmatch between the produced power and the demanded power is inevitiable. Therefore, it is required to utilize an energy storage system with a renewable energy source in order to store redundant energy or provide extra energy. Controlling the power flow in such applications fully is possible by means of using power electronic converters. The characteristics of photovoltaic systems that produces electrical energy from solar energy is nonlinear; therefore, the maximum power point tracking stragies are developed in order to absorb the maximum power from these systems. Traditionally, two separate converters are utilized to track the maximum power point and to control the battery power in photovoltaic-battery hybrid systems; since this approach is expensive and complicated, this thesis proposes a double-input dc-dc converter for photovoltaic-battery hybrid systems. The proposed converter is capable of tracking the maximum power point in a photovoltaic system, controlling the battery power as well as regulating the output voltage. In this thesis, the proposed converter is analyzed in detailed; then, this analysis is validated experimentally by a devoloped prototype. Finally, a control strategy is developed so as to control the photovoltaic-battery hybrid system, and this strategy is validated via simulation and experimental studies.
