Examination of some biochemical markers used in the diagnosis of coronavirus disease (COVID-19)

The study involving 60 cases from the control group and 120 Patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 enrolled within the hospitals of the Baghdad Health Department, Karkh from October 1, 2020, to March 15, 2021. The disease cases were divided into three groups according to severity; mild, moderate, and severe. The ROC curve was applied to evaluate the predictive performance of biochemical signs, assessed at admission. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to determine the autonomous risks for each marker. A comparison of the biocemical parameters between the mild, moderate, and severe groups showed significant differences in ferritin, LDH, d-dimer, ALT, AST, and CRP (P <0 .001). Age had a positive association with disease progression (p<0.001), with most patients high 60 years of age is in the severe group. The effect of the virus in males was higher than in women (57.5%, 42.5%), respectively. The study showed a clear rise in liver enzymes (ALT, AST) when compared with the control group (p<0.001) in both enzymes, and this increase in the level of liver enzymes was similar in all patients' groups and was not affected with the increase of the ages (p=0.39, p=0.71) in order, the levels of C-reactive protein and ferritin were increased in critically ill patients especially in the elderly (p<0.001), for both, while the D-dimer level was very high in all patients and had a positive correlation with disease severity and age (p<0.001).
