Abstract (EN)

This qualitative study explores the motivations behind Turkish individuals' participation or non-participation in BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) campaigns, focusing on the social, cultural, and political factors influencing consumer attitudes. It examines the role of institutions and media in shaping behavior toward the BDS movement. Using 16 semi-structured interviews; eight with participants and eight with non-participants from diverse educational and age backgrounds across different Turkish cities, the study applies thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) to identify key patterns. Findings reveal that those who support the boycott are often driven by political consciousness, humanitarian and religious values, and are influenced by social media, especially during times of conflict in Palestine. In contrast, non-participation is largely due to a lack of awareness about how to boycott, skepticism about its impact, or political disengagement. Social media emerged as a powerful mobilization tool, amplifying boycott messages through hashtags, videos, and awareness campaigns, which boost visibility and public engagement. The study adds to the understanding of political consumerism by highlighting the Turkish context as a significant case for BDS activism. It also lays the groundwork for comparative research in other Muslim societies on the influence of political and religious discourse on consumer behavior.
