The influence of the Qur'an in Eymen el-Atûm's novels

Abstract (EN)

Novel that entered in the Arab literature during Modern Arab Literature, which started with Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt, is a literary genre showing its own properties depending on the conditions of the community and time. Novel, which has the ability to reflect individual and social life quite well, has been influenced by the social and political situations of Arab world, so the structure of the community, its problems and the effect of politics on society have been the prominent topics in Arab novel. With this context, the prisons, which have had close connections with politics in Arab world, have become the places reflecting the features of the community in a real way. This, therefore, has made the prison literature an area where the topics studied in Modern Arab Literature have been most intensively felt. Eymen al-Atum, the subject of our study, has come to the fore with prison literature due to his political conviction in Jordanian prisons. After his first novel being published in 2012, the popularity of the writer in Arab world has accelerated. In about seventeen years, writing seventeen novels, the writer has generally preferred to base his novels on lived stories. He has gained a great fame due to his successful literary style and mentioning important events and figures. In the writer’s novels whose titles have been preferred by the writer to be from the verses of Holy Qur’an, the themes such as science, views and beliefs, pressure and cruelties, patriotism, stance and determination, freedom, death, family and friendship have come forefront. There is no academic study in Turkish about the writer, who frequently gives place quotations from Qur’anic verses in his novels. The study we carried out is the first example in terms of investigating the effect of Qur’an in the works of the writer. In the present study, the style that the writer has used the Qur’anic verses has been tried to be revealed with examples from the topics coming into prominence. It was seen that the author handled the verses in different ways and dimensions. The examples, which cover different uses in terms of meaning and form, are presented in accordance with the flow of the novels. Finally, in the light of these examples, the author's style of using the verses of the Qur'an in his novels was handled in a holistic way and the emerging views were evaluated.
