Özet (EN)

Cemeteries and hazire (small urban burial grounds surrounded by walls or bars within the premises of religious buildings) in Istanbul have traditionally held a considerable place in the fabric of the city both prior to its conquest by the Ottomans and throughout their 600 year-long reign. The regulations and reconfigurations introduced to meet urban needs prompted by population increase and modernization not only led to changes in the historic fabric of the city, but also gave birth to significant transformations in cemeteries and hazire burial grounds that had long become intertwined with the city's residential areas. Conceived as a fresh contribution to studies on Ottoman tombstones, relics of cultural heritage that constitute a significant field of work, particularly in terms of their quantity, this dissertation focuses on the tombstones within the confines of the Sivâsî Efendi Hazire. Within the scope of the study, the spatial and historic transformations of the area comprised of the dervish lodge, tombs, and hazire in Eyüp Nişancası have been identified, the inscription tablets of the tombstones have been deciphered and read, and efforts were made to obtain the biographic information of the deceased individuals buried there.
