Attitudes towards adhan (The case of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University)

From the point of view of the relationship between God and man, worship has an important place in human life. There are also some forms and conditions of worship which are fulfilled as a requirement of servitude in religions. There are different methods of calling in religious beliefs and Abrahamic religions for the fulfillment of these worships. As a call to prayer, one of the most important places of worship in Islam, the adhan was originally a call to worship believers with the voice of man by going up to high places. The developments that emerged in time caused a change in social structures, and the phenomenon we call society has become a structure in which very different elements, especially religious beliefs, live together. This situation led to some problem areas. One of these areas is adhan (ezan). On one side there is a section that sees adhan as an important religious symbol and accepts it as an indispensable part of religious identity, on the other hand, there is a section spread among a wide range of people, including those who identify themselves as religious, who complain about the large number of mosques and the loud performance of the adhan. One of the arguments put forward by these latter is that, in an age when digital technology is so advanced, it is a violation of human rights to perform the adhan in its current form. This study was carried out in order to understand how individuals look at the azan today, how they make sense of it and how they approach these current debates. The aim of this study is to determine the equivalent of these understandings regarding the azan in Van. In this study, which was conducted with the qualitative research method, data were obtained and evaluated by in-depth interview method on 19 academicians working at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University.
