Fan translations' infulence on the media industry with a focus on translation and entertainment sectors: An analysis

Fandoms – or fan communties – play a significant role in bringing recognition and fame to numerous media content that would eventually get integrated into the collective heritage of the world's popular culture . These communities are oftentimes formed by individuals belonging to differents nationalities and cultures coming together on various internet platforms. Once they find their footing in such spaces, they begin to grow and expand through many a colorful activites centered around the media product that constitutes the core of the community. As a type of community that operates within the principles of sharing and interactivity, they gain functionality through their own kind of a participatory culture, that is to say, a subculture known as fan cultures. By virtue of their substantial undestanding of an active and productive participation culture, fandom and its fannish features have proven to be an important tool in maintaining the continuity of popular culture and popular media products today. There exists various kinds of fan activities that are essential to the existence of all fandoms, as well as their collective fan culture in general. Among these activities, voluntary translation projects known as fan translations are of particular interest within the context of translation studies. These fan projects, which constitute one of the leading examples of today's translation activities, appear as a very comman practice within fan cultures, so much so that it would be fitting to call them a global translation movement. These translations are offered for free without any materialistic expectations on the translators' part and they are capable of reaching large audiences quickly via the internet. The sheer quantity of fan translations and their grip on social networks enabled many different content belonging to various languages and cultures from all over the world to be recognized beyond their intended audiences. This study aims to analyse the contribution of fan translations to the transformation of today's popular media content into a gigantic ecosystem and economy through subconsciously and perpetually feeding one another on a global scale. Document reviews and examination of various case studies were conducted in line with this objective, along with a survey study and a few interviews in order to draw a more precise conclusion. The purpose of the last two methods is to reveal the effective role fan translation play in media consumption of individuals who identify as fans, while also drawing attention to the significance of such variables within the context of the media industry. As a result, it has been observed that the fan cultures and the fan translation activities that have emerged within them have left some permanent traces in the development of the media industry, which is by far one the most profitable commercial entities in the world today.
