A study on the translations of children?s fantasy: The wonderful Wizard of Oz sample

21st century started with striking developments in terms of fantastic literature. Works in this field drew large audiences and created an enormous commercial market. In our resultant work of thesis on children?s fantastic literature, four different translations of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which is one of the major works of American Children?s Literature but not well-known in our country, were analyzed.Our research aimed to determine whether adaptation was applied as a translation strategy in fantastic children?s books. Firstly, the characteristics of children?s literature and fantasy were dwelt upon. After the position of children?s fantasy in the history of children?s literature was determined, we passed on our case study. To begin with, the formal properties of books were compared and it was found that there were noticable differences between the original book and the translations except for the one published by İş Bankası Kültür Publishing House. In textual analysis, the translators? decisions when dealing with problems in translations of fantastic children?s literature were explained within the framework of norms and adaptation. As a result, it was revealed that all translators used adaptation techniques in the translation of fantastic children?s literature. However, while some of these adaptations were a necessity for increasing readability, others manipulated the form and content of the text. Departing from this, we emphasized the negative effects of adaptations.The aim of this thesis is to draw attention to the negative aspects of adaptation when used as an overall translation strategy and to contribute to the improvement of the content and form of the books at the same time. Furthermore, we think that our thesis may be helpful in realization of the significance of specialization in translating children?s books.Key Words: Children?s Fantasy, Translation, Adaptation, Norms in Translation, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
