Will, freewill and act in Fârâbî and Ibn Sînâ

In this study, the thoughts of Fârâbî and Ibn Sînâ who are the peak thinkers in Islamic Philosophy about will (irade) and freewill (ihtiyar) has been tackled. Questions like human who is responsible of his acts "what kind of appointments he has for making act, which guidance he faced and what are the final results of his acts, what should be" are explained with using concepts that will and freewill in Fârâbî and Ibn Sînâ's works. This work consists on the introduction, two chapters and conclusion. In the introduction part, first we analyzed the concept of will (irade), freewill (ihtiyar) terminologically, and factors which are effective on them. In first chapter, we mentioned the will and freewill notions in Greek philosophy, which has an effect on Fârâbî, in Kindî and in the first period of Islamic theology (al-kalam). In addition, we approached will and freewill in Fârâbî, factors which effect humans and their acts, will and freewill in moral people and societies, happiness as the last purpose, divine will and humanistic will according to Fârâbî. For the second part, we analyzed will and freewill in Ibn Sînâ, human and factors, which affect his actions, happiness as the last purpose, moral factors which underlie will and freewill, divine will and humanistic will according to Ibn Sînâ. We mentioned will and freewill in Gazzâlî, İbn Bâcce and Fahreddin er-Râzî as the traditions of thought after İbn Sînâ. According to Islamic philosophers, human can reach to the happiness, which is last competence with free and willing acts. In the Islamic Philosophy, discussions about will and freewill have not been placed commonly. When the works of philosophers as Fârâbî and Ibn Sînâ who have an impact on their period and after that through the centuries are analyzed, guidance for humans for conveying them to the ultimate competence will show itself.
