Effects of pomagranate (punica granatum L.) on paracetamol inducted acute hepatic damage in mouses

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is; to present preservative efficiency and potential side effects of lyophilised absolute pomegranate juice extract on acute hepatic damage models which created by paracetamol usage in mouses. In our study, 80 non-pathogen, male Swiss Albino lab rats within 30-40 gr live weight range has been used. The study has performed in 2 main groups and a total of 8 subgroups. Different doses of pomegranate juice extract is given to mouses in first group which is the side effects group. And different doses of pomegranate juice extract is given simultaneosuly with a dose of paracetamol to mouses in second group which is the testing group. After the study, blood and tissue samples had collectedfrom euthanized rats. The results of biochemical analyses showed us that; the lyophilised extract which given along with paracetamol, had caused a significant decrease on serum AST, ALT, TP and TG levels. The pomegranate extract which is given to testing group caused a drop on RBC, HB, HCT and LENF concentrations. Results of histopathological evaluations presented taht; whilst the lyophilised pomegranate juice caused hepatic damage when used alone; using it simultaneously with paracetamol could have a preservative effect on liver in a specific dose. Measured AoA levels emphises to anti oxidant activity of lyophilised pomegranate juice extract. Result of study shows us, the effective dose of lyophilised absolute pomegranate juice extract on paracetamol induced hepatic damage is 200 mg/kg with regards to hepatoprotective activity. And results which gathered from the side effect group emphaises to possible hepatotoxic effects of lyophilised absolute pomegranate juice extract in mouses.
