The effect of different trainings methods on some physical and physiological parameters of wrestlers

Abstract (EN)
Aim: In this doctoral dissertation study, it was aimed to figure out/and compare the effect of three different training methods on some physical and physiological parameters of wrestlers. Material and Method: The wrestlers, aged 15-17, divided into three groups as Resistance (RG; n=12), Calisthenics (CG; n=12), and Wrestling (WG; n=13) by simple random sampling method. All groups continued to train for 4 days a week. RG and CG participated in their own training programs on Mondays and Wednesdays and also wrestling trainings with WG on Fridays and Saturdays. WG continued their wrestling trainings with their coaches for 4 days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday) a week. Height, body weight, body mass index, dynamic balance, flexibility, velocity, agility; hand grip, leg, and back strength anaerobic power, reaction time, (VO2max), and vital capacity measurements of the athletes in all three groups were taken as pre- and post-test. The findings were analyzed in SPSS Statistical Package Program; descriptive statistics were given. Although the number of sample was below 30 in all three groups, the normality of the data was tested using the Shapiro-Wilk test and no normal distribution was found. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank nonparametric test was used for comparing two related samples and the Kruskal Wallis (K Independent Samples) nonparametric test was used for comparing more than two independent samples. Multiple independent comparisons were made to determine the source of the difference with nonparametric independent two-sample Mann Whitney U test. Meaning level was accepted as p <0.05 and confidence interval was 95%. Results: With respect to the results obtained from the study; resistance training significantly influenced the height (Z=.3.002; p=.038;<.05) and body mass index (Z=-2.269; p=0.23; <.05), while calisthenics and wrestling training significantly influenced the height (Z=-2.836; p=.005;<.05; Z=-3.111; p=.002;<.05) and body weight (Z=-2.669; p=.008; <.05; Z=-2.691; p=0.07; <.05) of wrestlers. In group comparisons significant differences were exposed in dynamic balance (χ2= 15.886, p=000<.05) and agility (χ2=6.979; p=.031;<.05) in the RG and CG compared to the group performing WT. Anaerobic power (χ2=12.940; p=.002<.05) was significantly different between groups but there is a similarity of effect between RG and CG. Both calisthenics and resistance training are more effective than wrestling training in the development of right hand visual reaction time (χ2=8.922; p=.012;<.05), but the effects of all three training methods are similar in the left hand visual reaction time development. Conclusion: It is proposed that similar scientific studies be designed in different training periods and in athletic groups in order to generalize the results obtained from this doctoral thesis.
