Doç. Dr. Gülderen Uysal AKKUŞThe study comprises synthesis of calix[4]arene which contains phtalimidegroups on lower rim and their suitable polymer and their liquid-liquid extractionstudies. Structures of these compounds were characterized by spectroscopic techniques(FTIR, 1H NMR), elemental analysis and GPC (gel permeability chromatography).Synthetic work was carried out according to the methods described in theliterature. 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetra-hydroxycalix[4]-arene (1) wassynthesized. Compound 2 was synthesized by treatment with p-nitrobenzylbromide inacetonitrile in the presence of K2CO3. Then compound 3 was obtained by means oftreating compound 2 with N-(3-bromoethyl)-phtalimide in acetonitrile in the presenceof K2CO3 and KI. Then nitro groups in this compound were reduced into amino groupsby treatment of this compound with SnCl2 in ethanol. The monomer 4 was obtained bytreatment amino derivative of calix[4]arene with acryloyl chloride in CHCl3 in thepresence of pyridine. Finally the copolymer was obtained by treatment of thismonomer with styrene in toluene in the presence of radical initiator. All of the compounds were used in liquid-liquid extraction studies in order toobserve their ion transport properties and the metal cations used in these studies weresome alkali (Na+, K+ ve Cs+) and transition metal (Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+)cations.2007, 69 pagesKeywords: calixarene, copolymer, solvent extraction, transition metal
