Research of the effect of hidroxyapatite additive produced from different raw materials to strength of bone cement

Abstract (EN)

Polymethylmethacrylate based acrylic bone cement is the most common material used in the orthopaedic field to fix cemented prostheses to the bone. In this study, we aimed production of bone cement which has low polymerization temperature and high strength by adding hydroxyapatite additive that was produced using different raw materials. In the production of hydroxyapatite, the effect of different calcium (Ca2+) sources and aging times (4, 24, 48 and 72h) on yield were researched. The effect of the produced hydroxyapatite on yield of compression strength of bone cement was investigated. The hydroxyapatite produced with two different raw materials and different aging times were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Trasform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The produced hydroxyapatite was added as different amounts into acrylic bone cement. The produced acrylic bone cement were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Trasform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and TG/DTA (Thermogravimetric Differential Thermal Analysis). The strength of bone cement with hydroxyapatite additive was determined by compression test and the maximum temperature during polymerization was measured. In conclusion, it was observed that bone cement and hydroxyapatite produced with different raw materials was synthesized successfully, the addition hyroxyapatite (stated amount) increased the compressive strength and decreased the polymerization temperature.
