Abstract (EN)
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of drilling systems on bone conduction thresholds in mastoidectomy operations. Patients admitted with the diagnosis of chronic otitismedia between years 2012 July - 2014 September were included in the study. The type of the mastoidectomy wasdetermined retrospectively. The age, gender, pre and postoperative odiologic tests, side of operated ear and type of mastoid surgery were evaluated statistically. Difference in bone conduction thresholds in radical, canal wall down (CWD) and canal wall up (CWU) mastoidectomies was evaluated pre and postoperatively. Totally 45 patients were included in the study (27 female and 18 male). The average age was 32.8 (median 31). The number of patients who underwent surgery from right ear was 22 and 23 patients were operated from left ear. In order to evaluate bone conduction thresholds during drill usage in radical, CWD and CWU mastoidectomies; bone conduction thresholds in 0.5-1and 2kHz (speech frequencies) and 4kHz were evaluated preoperatively and in 6 months postoperatively. No statistical difference was obtained between pre and 6 months postoperative bone conduction levels. As a conclusion, the effect of vibration and noise due to drill usage in mastoid surgery, demographic findings such as age, gender, the side of the ear have showed no significant difference in three different mastoidectomy types performed in the study.
