Evaluation of the effectiveness of different oral hygiene education methods after periodontal treatment

Our study was planned to determine the most effective of 3 different methods used in our country and in the world in removing microbial dental plaque and maintaining periodontal health. A total of 210 patients, aged between 18 and 60 years, with 105 gingivitis and 105 periodontitis who were systemically healthy, literate, and no visual-hearing impairment, were included in our study. The patients were divided into three groups of 70 (35 gingivitis-35 periodontitis), including narration, video watching and leaflets on the model, and were named as Group A, Group B and Group C. Patients in Group A were taught video by watching videos in Group A, brochures were given to patients in Group B, and oral hygiene training was explained to patients in Group C. In order to evaluate the oral hygiene education methods described, plaque index, gingival index, pocket depth in probing, clinical attachment level and bleeding index measurements were performed and the treatments were completed on the first day before phase 1 periodontal treatment. When the clinical measurements taken from the patients in the two-month study period were evaluated, a significant decrease was observed in all parameters, but there was no significant difference between the measured parameters between the groups. A significant difference in bleeding index was observed only in the probing measured at week 8 between Group A and Group B. According to the results of the research, there was no significant difference between the activities of the oral hygiene trainings, we think that video and brochure methods can be used simply and effectively in cases where training on the model cannot be provided.
