Effect of different denture cleaning procedures on surface roughness and candida retention of acrylic resins

Abstract (EN)

The most important factor in the development of prosthetic stomatitis is the adhesion and colonization of Candida albicans (C. albicans) to acrylic base materials. Insufficient denture cleaning facilitates C. albicans colonization in acrylic base materials. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of different denture cleaning procedures on the roughness and candida uptake of acrylic resins over time. Furthermore, the study focuses on evaluating the effects of different denture cleaning procedures on the surface roughness and adherence of candida of acrylic resins. A thermopolymerized acrylic resin (Meliodent), an autopolymerized acrylic resin (Meliodent Rapid Repair) and a hard relining material (GC Reline Hard) were used in the study. The round shaped samples of 10×10×2 mm were prepared. The samples were sterilized with an ultraviolet device and kept in distilled water for 24 hours. C. albicans strain (ATCC1023) was cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar medium at 37°C for 24 hours. Samples were contaminated with diluted candida solution. Then, the colonies were counted visually by the eye counting method. After the first microbiological test, the samples were divided into subgroups to be subjected to distilled water (control group), Corega alkaline peroxide containing effervescent tablet, toothbrushing and denture cleaning procedures with electrolyzed water. The surface roughness values of the samples were measured with a contact profilometer device both before the denture cleaning procedures were applied and the 7th day, 1st month and 3rd month after the application. Candida retention was assessed at baseline and 3 months after of cleaning practices. Statistical analysis of the the surface roughness test and microbiology test data was perfomed unsing SPSS 17.0. The Shapiro Wilk test was used to assess how well the data adhered to the normal distribution. Three-way ANOVA test and paired sample t-test with Bonferroni correction were used for repetitive samples in surface roughness analyses. p<0,05 level was considered significant in all analyzes. In this study, the surface roughness values of the three different acrylic resin materials decreased significantly in the 1st and 3rd months after the application of denture cleaning procedures (p<0.05). After three months, the roughest surfaces were measured in the electrolyzed water groups. As a result of the microbiological test at the end of three months, the most adherence of candida was observed in the electrolyzed water groups of the materials.
