Fascism and the press: Fascistic discourse in newspaper texts

This study dwells on the ways that fascistic discourse, reproduced in daily life, is reflected on cultural, social and political structures. This study, by demonstrating how people?s standpoints and value judgments are reshaped through the fascistic discourse produced in newspaper texts, aims to explain the polarizations that this situation leads to within the society.In the first chapter, the concept of ?fascism? being addressed in detail, the relationship among nationalism, racism and fascism will be discussed. Based, in particular, on the Germany, Spain and Italy cases of the recent era, it is aimed to explain the recent history of fascism. In parallel to this, answers to such questions as ?what kind of qualities fascism bears?, ?how it has evolved into an ideological structure which is prone to become widespread? and ?which conditions lay the groundwork for fascism? will also be sought in this chapter.In the second chapter, findings about the reproduction of fascistic discourse, fascist thought and fascism as an ideology in daily life and the concept of ?the other? are included. In addition to this, the relationship between ideology and the press will be touched upon and structural qualities of newspaper texts will be explained, and a theoretical framework regarding the method of discourse analysis in newspaper texts will be drawn.In the third chapter, organization of the news, creation of social reality in the news and fascistic discourse reproduced in newspaper texts will be analyzed in detail. In this analysis, first pages of newspapers, and mainly headings will be taken as basis. Accordingly, the characteristics that newspapers have in common in terms of fascistic discourse, the relationship between their fascistic discourse and political attitude and the reasons underlying the press? tendency towards fascistic discourse in general will be presented.Key Words: Fascism, Fascistic Discourse, Newspaper Texts, the Other, Discourse of Hatred
