Overtime work and its' impacts: An inquiry in Turkish banking sector

Abstract (EN)

Overtime works are such works that exceeds the limits of normal working hours determined by the Labour Law, in order to increase production or prevent delays/failures in production process or to meet the urgent needs of business enterprise and community.The fact that both employers and employees support overtime facility on their own reasonable causes, make the concept widespread. Overtime work is not only important for wages, but also for worker?s health, balance of work and life, impact to regarding family and social life, productivity of work, competition power of employer, economic and employment politics of the state, as well. Controlling the convenience to working time limits strictly and arranging deterrent legal procedures for whom to violate them, shall contribute to employment positively and shall motivate working life by balancing work and life.In the study, historical progression and steps of overtime work in the world and in our country discussed. Also, the labour law no.4857 in force in Turkey is analyzed and decrees of overtime work in other related laws reviewed. And practices of our and some other countries compared in this respect and impacts of it for employers, employees and the states investigated. Then, an empirical study to investigate the of impacts of overtime work who works in banks that is one of the mostly overworked business sector is taken up and the results commented. The method of collecting data is face-to-face public survey with employees working in nine banks in different cities in our country and stratified sampling is used.
