Production of Fe-W-B in-situ composite materials and investigations of their properties

Abstract (EN)

Powder metallurgy is one of the methods which is used in many industrial areas. In this study, it is aimed that production of Fe-W-B in-situ composite materials via powder metallurgy and mechanical alloying. In the first step, ferro-tunsgten, ferro-boron and iron powders are mixed in different ratios and subjected to mechanical alloying process under protective atmosphere for 20 hours using a Attritor. Pre-alloyed powder mixtures are shaped as cylindrical coupons (ø15-5mm in size) under the pressure of 115 MPa. And that coupons are sintered at 1200 °C and 1250 °C for 120, 240 and 360 minutes under the argon atmosphere. And, characterization of the produced in-situ composite materials are realized by using optical and scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, Vickers micro-hardness and density measurement and wear tests. As a results of studies, in-situ composite materials produced with MD2 (20%W+30%B+50%Fe, by atomic) composition are dense, hard, wear-resistant and it consist of Fe, Fe2B and FeWB phases.
