Vitamin D levels in cats infected with feline herpesvirus type-1

Feline Herpesvirus Type-1 (FeHV-1) is transmitted by infected or carrier cats through ocular, nasal or oral secretions. FeHV-1 is particularly pathogenic to kittens. Adult cats are also often carriers. FeHV-1 causes upper respiratory tract infections in adults and kittens. Adult cats carry the virus latently, especially in the trigeminal ganglia and nervous tissue. In addition, latently infected female cats transmit the virus during pregnancy and lactation. Cat shelters, keeping multiple cats together play an important role in the transmission of infection. Today, information about the effect of vitamin D, which has been determined to be a pre-hormone rather than a vitamin, in FeHV-1-infected cats is quite limited. In this study, it was aimed to measure vitamin D levels in FeHV-1 infected cats and thus to determine its relationship with disease activity. Within the scope of the research, "I. Cats infected with Feline Herpes Virus Type-1" and "II. Two groups were determined as "Healthy Cats with No Disease Determined". Blood samples were taken from Vena cephalica antebrachii of each of the cats included in the study into serum tubes without anticoagulant and centrifuged, then the 25 hydroxy vitamin levels in these samples were determined by radioimmunoassay method. In this study, where appropriate statistical methods were used to calculate and compare the obtained parameters, the mean standard deviation values of 25 (OH) levels in FeHV-1 infected cats and healthy cats were found to be 33.30 and 64.70 ng / ml, respectively. According to the results obtained in our research, it can be said that measuring vitamin D levels in FeHV-1 infected cats and accompanying the necessary supplements to the treatment will be beneficial.
