Abstract (EN)

This study was planned to investigate the effects of sacroiliac and lumbar mobilization as additional interventions to conventional physiotherapy (CP) on pain, balance, neuromuscular control, hip range of motion (hROM) and hip function in patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). Twenty individuals diagnosed with FAIS by the same orthopedic physician were included in study. They were randomly divided into two groups; the control group (CG) and the experimental group (EG) (n=1:1). Both groups received CP, including supervised sessions an a home exercise program, for a total of 12 sessions over a 6-week period, with two sessions per week. In addition to these interventions, the EG received lumbosacral mobilizations (Mulligan anterior and posterior ilium technique, Maitland lumbar mobilization) during each session. Pain (numeric pain rating scale (NPRS)), balance and neuromuscular control (star excursion balance test (SEBT)), hROM (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction) and and hip function (hip outcome score (HOS)) were assessed before and after (at the end of the 6-week). Intragroup evaluations showed statistically significant improvements in hROM except hip extension, NPRS scores, reach distances in the anterior and posterolateral directions of SEBT and total and subscale scores of HOS in both groups. In the intergroup evaluation, the EG demostrated significant results in hip external rotation (p=0,033) and lumbosacral mobility (p=0,015) compared to the CG. Although the addition of sacroiliac and lumbar mobilizations to CP yielded superior outcomes in all parameters compared to CP alone, significant differences were only in external rotation hROM and lumbopelvic mobility.
