The evaluation of prospective elementary science teachers' subject matter knowledge on some biology subjects

The purpose of this study is to find out prospective elementary science teachers?subject matter knowledge of biology.The field knowledge, teaching vocational knowledge and general information lessonsare mostly three dimensions at the teacher training programs.Teaching profession, the importance of the teacher education and the roles of theteachers are the concepts which become a current issue almost in every society.In the last decade, most of the developed countries, firstly the USA, started to re-examine the concept of teaching and the teacher education system. Then they initiated somereform movements. The bacis reason of this current issue is the expectation to becomeincreasingly important of the teaching proffession in the twentyfirst ceuntry.This research was applied with at Gazi Education Faculty of Gazi University duringthe fall semester of 2005-2006 academic years. Data were collected between October 2005and February 2006.The analysis of datum has been made in computer by using SPSS (Statistical Packagefor Social Studies) packet program.By analyzing the quantitative findings abtained by scale and test used in the study,these findings abtained by scale and test used in the study, these findings were supported bythe qualitative findings obtained by the interviews with the students.The result of this research it can be asserted that prospective elementary scienceteachers? knowledge isn?t sufficient the subjects of biology.Keywords: Subject Matter Knowledge, Science Education, Prospective ElementaryScience Teacher
