Defining he reasons of motivation of students in science classes ( physics, chemistyry, biology )

ABSTRACTScience and technology have been indispensable in our daily lives. They have been developing rapidly every day. When it is considered that the science education has a great part on this development, the science education will have a great importance and value on this rapid development.Many direct or indirect reasons influence the students? success on science lessons. Many reasons such as, the defiance in maths knowledge, the serious prejudices towards science lessons, the inability to relate between the science lessons, the apprehension as there are many formulas, the excess of graphics and diagrams and the difficulties in interpreting them, the inability to use the learnt items in the daily lives, individual differences and environmental factors influence the students? motivation on the science lessons.This task is done to work out the reasons why 9th grade students in state and private schools can not get motivated in science subjects (like Physics,Chemistry and Biology) and the factors which are influential on this issue. The paper is based on the 9th grade students studying at both private and government high school in Istanbul through 2006-2007 academic years. 385 (%67) 9 th grade students studying in the high schools in Pendik, and 189 (%33) students studying in the private high schools in Kartal, Maltepe and Sultanbeyli, total 574 9th grade students compose the sampling of the research paper.The SPSS programme is used to evaluate the survey results applied to the subjects. The findings are put into table and interpreted. Finally, the results are given and some suggestions are made. Key words : Science lessons, Motivation, School. December, 2007Mehmet ÇAM
