Effectiveness of preparing in service training programs for science and technology teachers on performance assessment

The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of in service training (inset) programs for science and technology teachers on performance assessment. In this study mixed method was used as a research methodology. The samples of study consisted of 30 Science and Technology teachers and 245 Primary School teachers working in Artvin. 25 volunteers? Science and Technology Teachers participated inset program. This study was implemented in four part. In the first part; literature research, questionnaire and interview were carried out to determining teachers? in-service needs towards performance assessment. In the second part; inset course program toward teachers? need developed. While in-service training course program was developed, System approach model consisting of five part as need analysis, design, develop, application and evaluation was appropriated. In the third part, course programme was presented to teachers with 60 hours and application plans. Firstly; achievement test and attitude scale were applied to teachers as pre-test before the course and as post-test after course. Besides, observations was made and teaching material examined that teachers prepared during the course. In the last part; two of the teachers who joined the course as a volunteer have been observed, interviewed. Also examination of their teaching material to determine how to carry out performance assessment in their classroom after course was done. As a result of study, preparing HİE course programme toward performance assessment was determined to assist in improvement for teachers? knowledge (t = 18.604: p< 0.05) and skill. It was determinate that inset course program positively affect teachers? attitudes toward performance assessment, but there is no meaningful differences (t = 1.393: p> 0.05). In the follow up stage; it has been determined that two Science and Technology Teachers joined in inset course used into learning atmosphere lot of knowledge and skill gained in the course, but don?t use anecdote record and check list in their lessons. It has been suggested that teachers were presented concrete sample, make application of subject and their was given feedback about materials which were developed by teachers in course programme during in service courses.
