Synthesis of dipodal schiff base ligands and metal complexes containing phenantrene-imidazole

In this master's thesis study, new phenanthrene-imidazole containing dipodal Schiff base ligands and cobalt (II) complexes were synthesized. In the first part of the study, hydroxide terminated dipodal Schiff bases were synthesized. These ligants were; 2,2'-((1E,1'E)-(1,2phenylenebis(azanilylidene))bis(methanylilidene))- diphenol (1); 1,1'-((1E,1'E)(1,2-phenylene- bis(azanilylidene))bis(methanylilidene))bis(naphthalene-2-ol) (2); 6,6'-((1E,1'E)((methylenebis(4,1phenylene))bis(azanilylidene))bis(methanylidene))bis(2-methoxyphenol) (3); 1,1'-((1E,1'E)((methylenebis(4,1-phenylene))bis(azanilylidene))bis(methanyl-ylidene))bis(naphthalene-2-ol) (4). Then, bromine-terminated phenanthrene-imidazole; 2-(4-bromophenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (5) was synthesized. In the second part of the thesis, phenanthrene-imidazole-containing dipodal Schiff base ligands; (1E,1'E)-N,N'-(1,2-phenylene)bis(1-(2-(4-(1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)phenoxy)phenyl)methanimine) (L1); (1E,1'E)-N,N'-(1,2phenylene)bis(1-(2-(4-(1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)phenoxy)naphthalen-1-yl)- methanimine) (L2); (1E,1'E)-N,N'-(methylenebis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1-(2-(4-(1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)phenoxy)-3-methoxy-phenyl)methanimine) (L3) and (1E,1'E)-N,N'-(methylenebis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1-(2-(4-(1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)phenoxy)naphthalen-1-yl)methanimine) (L4) were synthesized and characterized. Then, cobalt(II) complexes of dipodal Schiff base ligands containing phenanthrene-imidazole were synthesized and characterized. The photochemical properties of the ligands and complexes were studied.
