Evaluation of the first five year olds growth of children with phenylketonuria

In this study we evaluated the growth of phenylketonuria patients during the first five years, who were born between 2000 and 2010. Phenylketonuria patients diagnosed during the neonatal period with newborn screening test or sibling history, who were on a medical diet and follow-up and fulfilled the study criteria were retrospectively evaluated. We compared the anthropometric data of height, weight and head circumference obtained during outpatient clinic follow-up from 76 girls, 71 boys, from the diagnosis until the age of 5 years, using the WHO Anthro computer program. As a result; patients with mild phenylketonuria and classic phenylketonuria instead of failure to thrive were faced with overweight risk and it was found that the high of the scale compared to healthy peers decreased at 5 years of age. During the first five years the girls starting from the 3 month, and the boys from the 6 month to 5 year had statistically higher "(p<0.05)" weight compared to WHO measurements; in girls growth in height up to 2 years was higher and in boys lower than WHO; and head circumference was lower than WHO measurements in boys. Comparison of mild phenylketonuria and classical phenylketonuria according to weight for height and height for age between girls and boys. In all cases weight for age z-scores were higher in girls than in boys at the ages of 3, 6 months and 1 year. When evaluated "weight for height, weight" for age mean z-scores according to WHO, in all boy cases with phenylketonuria reach it peak value at 2 and 4 year; in girls 6 month and 2 year of age. When evaluated BMI for age z-scores according to WHO, it was found that it reached the highest value from 2 to 4 years. High levels of weight in patients with phenylketonuria slowed down at 5 years of age. All of the cases were breastfed for varying periods and no "statistical significance was found" between weight for height, "weight for age, height" for age, "BMI for age and" head circumference by age were evaluated according to age. As the breast milk intake of the cases evaluated by age "there was a statistically" significant weak "correlation between weight and" height measurements at 5 years.
