Analysis of efficiency criteria at Shanghai and Mersin ports using Fermatean Fuzzy set theory: Integration of AHP and COCOSO methods

Abstract (EN)

As international trade continues to expand rapidly, container ports have become central to strategic logistics networks. This study comparatively analyzes the operational efficiency of Mersin International Port (MIP), one of Turkey's leading container ports, and the Port of Shanghai (SIPG), which has the highest container volume in the world. Five main criteria were considered in the analysis: number of container cranes, quay length, container storage area, annual container volume, and number of personnel. The criteria were converted into fuzzy numbers using the Intuitionistic Fuzzy Triangular Rating method, weighted with Fuzzy AHP, and performance scores were generated by ranking with the Fermatean Fuzzy COCOSO method. The results indicate that SIPG is more efficient due to its advanced technology and strong infrastructure, while MIP, despite its regional competitive advantage, lags behind in infrastructure and automation. The study reveals that in order for container ports to achieve sustainable competitive advantage, priority should be given to infrastructure investments and technological developments.
