The importance of Johann Joachim Quantz in the history of flute

Johann Joachim Quantz, who was a flute virtuoso, composer, flute maker, teacher, music writer and theorist, is one of the most important figures in the history of flute. Throughout his whole life, he endeavored to enrich his repertoire and improve his instrument. Quantz, one of the foremost musicians of the galant and the empfindsamer styles, is regarded among the founders of Berlin school. He has influenced the history of music as well as the history of flute with his work called An Essay of a Method forPlaying the Transverse Flute (Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen) in which he conveyed his experiences, thoughts and knowledge. It is qualified enough to be a reference guide for those who are interested in the music of the 18th century. In this study, we gave information regarding Quantz?s life, his musical atmosphere, his musical style, the improvements he made in the flute and his essay.
