Abstract (EN)

Objective: There is a large amount of data showing the relation between functional gastrointestinal system diseases of gastroesophageal reflux disease and irritable bowel syndrome with sleeping disorders. Studies related to sleep quality and sleeping disorders on patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) are limited. We aimed to research the sleep quality in the sub-groups of FD which meet the ROMA III diagnosis criteria?s.Material and Method: 75 patients with epigastric pain syndrome (EAS), 62 patients with postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) and 50 healthy volunteer were included in the study. Symptom scores of dyspepsia in patients with nocturnal symptoms have been evaluated. All groups were subjected to the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index survey by the same physician, in order to evaluate their sleep quality of last one month. Results: The sleep quality in patients with EAS and PDS has been disrupting in high ratios if compared with control group (p?0.001, p?0.001). But there haven?t been found any differences between the patients of EAS and PDS. The sleep quality of FD patients with nocturnal symptoms has been found disordered with the high ratios, compared with FD patients without nocturnal symptoms and with the control group (p?0.001, p?0.001). Even so, the sleep quality of FD patients without nocturnal symptoms was lower than the control group (p=0.001). Poor sleep quality was found in relation with increasing age (r=0.367, p?0.001), increasing BKI (r=0.230, p=0.002), having dyspepsia (r=0.307, p?0.001), and having nocturnal symptoms (r=0.378, p?0.001).Conclusion: İt has been found that in our study, the sleep quality in patients with FD is disordered but any difference hasn?t been found in FD sub-groups. A positive relation has been determined between nocturnal symptom frequency and poor sleep quality. As a conclusion, it has been found that the sleep quality is disordered in patients with FD even so they haven?t nocturnal symptoms. Therefore, nocturnal symptoms in patients with dyspepsia should be considered important in terms of sleep quality.
