Abstract (EN)
The form is a fundamental element for entities to express themselves in the physical world. Firstly, the existence of creatures in nature is manifested itself as a form. The structure of a dust cloud, the emergence of reflection or the sound of entity, can be taken as a form of expression. However, emergence of a reflection or a voice depends on the interaction between the materials. In this sense, the existence requires a solid or a liquid form. Therefore, "the form" is considered as a fundamental component of existence. As a scope of this thesis, the process of form formation, and the existence/understanding of form in other disciplines are studied. Form formation processes can be dealt with in many different situations, in particular, as a scope of this study, form and geometry relations are handled with an interdisciplinary approach. In this thesis, geometry and form generation methods are examined through different theories. In addition to this, form formation processes are investigated with interdisciplinary theories and hybrid methods interacting by geometry, and the process of producing, transforming and diversifying the form through geometry rules are studied. This process reveals the dynamic processes of the form in continuous transformation with the geometry information which passes between the disciplines through different methods and perspectives. The methods examined in the theories show how geometry is used as a productive tool, and by its constraints. Design can be thought as a process that includes constraints, and these constraints can be perceived as rules. Within these constraints, architects must be able to design more productive creations by synthesizing the design process with his own definition of rules. As the scope of the different approaches involved in this process expands, new creative possibilities are arising. Designer can integrate different approaches into design phase. This situation gives designer an opportunity to create a wide variety of ways. The interdisciplinary approach aids to reveal new approaches. With abstract geometry, the processes of form generation and derivation can be defined. Designer can control this practice with geometric methods. It is thought that interdisciplinary work can provide a creative progression for the designer. In the first part, derivation methods derived from Euclidean geometry are investigated. Inspected systems include forms that can be derived on the basis of platonic solids. The methods studied under the titles of Archimedes objects, Stellation methods and Space filling polyhedra, which are transformed according to the substructure of the platonic solids, transform basic geometric forms into a more complex geometry. With the help of these, form generation methods are investigated. Examination of the geometrical procedures of platonic objects' mechanisms has provided a systematic perspective on the process of form formation. The question of how to form a new and productive structure, as opposed to the limitations of form-making methods to the rules, has taken its place in the study of the thesis as a concept. In the second part, form transformation mechanisms are examined through nature, geometry and theories. In this section, the structure of natural forms with geometry has been defined and how it is deciphered with different theories is investigated. Continuingly, Haeckel and the representations of the forms in the nature, Fractal geometry, D'Arcy Thompson "Theory of Transformations", and the position of these theories in architectural approaches have been examined in different chapters. Interdisciplinary work requires an efficient and solution-oriented union. However, it is thought that a theorist can reveal different forms of thinking in order to be able to exhibit creative approaches. The production of geometric methods in a systematic way has actually created a new system within a systematic method creating generative methods and production of new forms. The forms derivation operators are decrypted in this section, the system approach in the system has been examined. Subsequently, the system approach in nature has been studied. The forms in the nature are becoming defined by geometry. This situation has shown a state of working in a synthesis with the information in different disciplines. The form generation operators in different theories have discovered the design language of nature and this situation brings out hybrid methods. The theories investigated within this thesis decipher the relationship between the different rule definitions and the geometry transformation. Beyond theoretical concepts, it conveys a wide range of expressions of form generation, with mutual relations and rule arrays defined by geometry. In this case, the form generation approaches in the theories are supported by architectural examples, which shows the reflection of the theories on an architectural scale. Computational thinking creates a new network of knowledge by linking different theories. These information networks transfer different methods to the design discipline, allowing the creation of hybrid processes with computational thinking. It has been seen that the rule-based geometric approaches in the theories are related with the computational thinking. The methods used in these theories is found to be related with the commands in today's computer-aided design tools. A link is established between the rules in the studied theories and the commands of the computer-aided design tools. With these explored commands, the methods in the theories have been re-experienced. The approaches used in such theories were reproduced with computer aided design tools. It is understood that a command is not only perceived as a production operator, but also as an element that affects the multi-layered creative process. The commands in the computer-aided design tools have been considered as a supporting force for creative process from another point of view. At this point it is thought that the transfer of approaches released from different theories to the design process and the connection of these rules may introduce some new creative approaches to the process itself. The space of form generation expands with tools based on operational computation and it enables these generations to be made in staying connected to the same genre. As the scope of different approaches combined with design methods expands, new creation possibilities are increasing. The designer can produce family members by constructing their own creation language with geometry. In the rules that designer creates, the form will be dynamic and the transformation will be continuous. It is inevitable that architectural design depends on various constraints. Within these constraints, architect designs his own process. It is an important competence for architects to be able to demonstrate creative approaches by incorporating constraints into the design process. In this sense, architects or designers can create a formula with design commands (operators) within these constrains, rather than seeing constraints as an obstacle, and they can dominate form generations in a wide variety of plastic aspects. At this point, the rules that are included in the design process from different disciplines can be included whenever the designer desires. This can create architectural products in different sizes and variations. These rules can be perceived as constraints, but it is important that how these constraints (rules) affect the architect in the creative process. If the design process is thought to be proceeding with constraints, the designer can transform these constraints into a productive process. The designer can synthesize his rules with different approaches and create a new generative process for himself. In this process, the designer can create products that expand his imagination.
