A moving vehicle has kinetic energy. In order to reduce vehicle speed, it is necessary to convert its kinetic energy into heat energy. This heat energy cause brake pads to be exposed to excessive temperature The breaking efficiency reduces in time and in this case some problems (reducing in brake performance, defect running, rapid brake pad wear and noise) occur.In this study 12 different brake pad materials having 4 different thicknesses were subjected to braking process during 300 s. Temperature and stress occurring during braking process were investigated by using finite elements method. ABAQUS software was used for numeric solutions.The higher temperature values are obtained toward to exterior sections due to thermal power which has effect on brake pad depend on distant from brake pad center. The highest temperature values are occurred on surfaces of brake pad which contact with disc. A inverse ratio is determined between material thermal conductivity coefficient and specific heat and density.The highest stress zones which occurs on brake pad is casing corners and brake pad. This is in middle canal section. A brake pad which has high coefficient of thermal expansion and elasticity module has high stress value too. It is found that variation of stress in time is depend on brake pad thickness besides thermal and mechanical properties.By the amount of wearing increases, the amount of temperature, temperature difference and stress value increase. These case shows that the brake pad lifetime consumes not only linearly but also rapidly depend on increasing amount of wearing.
