Reflection of futurism movement on costumes and its usage in cinema

Futurism is an art movement pioneered by Marinetti, an important poet of the period of literature, because of the reaction to the inability of Italy to catch the technological development in Europe in the 19th century and leaded by other artists such as Umberto Boccioni, Luigi Russolo, Carlo Cara, Giacomo Balla and Gino Severini by the help of the advanced industrial structure developing in the 20th century. This movement of modern art helped to save Italy from pessimistic days of that time. The futurism movement included works mostly in literature, painting, sculpture, ceramics, fashion, textile, theatre architecture and gastronomy. However, the futurists, who acquired the philosophy of keeping up with the tempo of the new age by combining realities of life and art, were not only limited to writing, painting, sculpture, ceramics. Italian poet Marinetti and his colleagues set principles for theatre and cinema before the beginning of the First World War. It is known that the first examples of futurism movement were given by Russian filmmakers during the war. The cinema, aiming at moving the viewer beyond ordinary human perspective, went through time and space creation in accordance with the technology of the time. In the first years, the films, known to be highly influenced by theatre, created unique principles with the use of decor, accessories, clothes and make-up. The movement reached broad masses through motion picture films by artists considering art rather than being produced by genuine, is one of its counterparts, even beyond, and futurist effect naturally reflected in clothes. In this context, the study examines how clothing style has changed through time and how the futurism movement shaped it. In the light of manifestos fundamental criteria of futuristic clothing have been determined and fifth movie from the list of the best 30 futuristic films in IMDB science fiction subdivision have been tried to be evaluated in terms of the position obtained by the movement in the cinema and the usage of the costumes. The main aim of the study is to reveal the reflection of futurism movement on costumes and the forms of its usage in cinema by discussing both fashion and cinema, which is a means of communication
