The effect of musical articulation education on basic musical articulation characteristics of the violin students attending at Gazi University Gazi Education Faculty Fine Arts Education Department Music Education Branch

The purposes of this study are to determine the musical articulation characteristics of the violin students at Gazi University Gazi Education Faculty Fine Arts Education Department Music Education Branch and the effect of the musical articulation education on the students? musical articulation ability.This research is considered as a descriptive study for its methodology, the procedure applied and the nature of the data collected, and an experimental study as well for its another aspects.In the study, in light of the literature reviewed, it has been suggested that musical articulation has an important place in violin education.The population of this study is the violin students at Gazi University Gazi Education Faculty Fine Arts Education Department Music Education Branch. The sample consisted of 20 sophomore and junior violin students, 10 of which being study and 10 of which being control group, attending at Gazi University Gazi Education Faculty Fine Arts Education Department Music Education Branch. The data was collected through an observation form consisting of two sections, and a questionnaire consisting of five sections used to quantify the qualitative data and to determine the technical difficulty ratings from expert opinions.Whether there was a statistically significant difference between the musical articulation performances of the study and the control groups was determined through Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Z test. In the study, significance level was at 0,05.In the study, the students? musical articulation characteristics were found to be low in general, and some of the students? musical articulation characteristics were found to be inadequate. Yet, it has been determined that the musical articulation education applied affects the students? musical articulation characteristics positively and meaningfully.The results of the study show that playing the notes of a musical work as they are written is not enough to project the musical expression, and students are needed to be educated to read and apply some other musical symbols correctly, and, at this point, it is necessary that violin educators guide students in this regard. It is also thought that it can be beneficial to perform this kind of research in other musical instruments.
