Determining the effect of a senior emergency physician working at the triage on the waiting and processing time at gazi university medicine faculty hospital adult emergency department

The purpose of this study was to essay the efficiency of `see and treat? in our emergency department, that new on the literature and training in various centers, to improve the waiting time and processing time in the owercrowded emergency departments. The data of control group collected for one week period and for 24 hours at the existing triage system. Afterwards a senior emergency physician joined the triage team and all the patients were assessed, necessary interventions started and some patients with minor problems treated at the time of triage, if necessary prescribed and then discharged, for 1 week period and 12 hours per day from 12:00 a.m. to 23:59 p.m. Waiting time and processing time of various categories of patients were compared with the control group. The performance on waiting times and processing times was analysed and comparisons were carried out via chi-square for dependent variables and student-t test for independent variables. The waiting time was increased from 16,0 ± 18,3 min. in the control group to 22,6 ± 23,5 min. in the trial group. The processing time was decreased from 160.1 ± 193.0 min. in control group to 106,2 ± 115,9 min. in the trial group. The reason of the waiting time that longer at the trial group was contributed to that various process about the evaluation and treatment during the waiting time get some time but this condition results in shortened processing time.
