Comparison of beliefs about substance use and treatment motivations at the first admission and dischange of patients under addiction treatment in Gaziantep AMATEM

Özet (EN)

The study was conducted to comparison of the treatment motivation and beliefs about substance use of inpatients who are treated at Gaziantep ASATEC unit in the first hospitalization and discharge. All the patients diagnosed as substance use disorder according to DSM-V who apply to Ahmet Şireci ASATEC unit of 25 Aralık Satate Hospital in during the research constitute the research population. The sample of the research has been consisted of 173 patients who are suitable for the criteria of the research. The data has been collected by using Descriptive Information Form, Treatment Motivation Questionnaire (TMQ) and Beliefs About Substance Use Questionnaire (BSU) by face-to-face interviews with patients as two stage in the first hospitalization and discharge. Percentile, arithmetic mean, standard deviation and correlation analyzes and t-test were used to evaluate data. Mean age of the patients was 28.19±7.38. The number of hospitalization before was no more than 14 times and mean number was 2.66±2.67. The minimum time that patients didn't use substance after in patient treatment was 1 month, the maximum time of that was defined 60 months and mean time of that was defined 7.02±10.81 months. It was defined that 42.8% of the patients were hospitalization before and 86.1% of the patients tried to stop using substange by oneself. TMQ total scores of patients were significantly higher at the end of treatment compared to first admission (p<0.05). Mean scores of internal motivation and confidence to the treatment subscales of TMQ were significantly higher at the last evaluation compared to first evaluation (p<0.05). There were no difference in other subscales that were external motivation and to seek interpersonal assistance (p>0.05). BSU total mean scores of patients were significantly lower at the end of the treatment compared to first admission (p<0.05). As a result, in this study it was found that inpatient treatment of patients with substance use disorder increases treatment motivation, especially internal motivation and confidence to the treatment, and decrease irrational beliefs about substance use.
