Measures and order in late ottoman period

This study covers the investigation of the changes framing the discursive practices within two distinctive vectors of change cutting these practices: measure and order. The objective is to present the social and cultural process peculiar to the Ottoman world that diffentiate the modern in formation in the 19th and 20th centuries from the classic frame of mind throughout the 16th to the 19th centuries in relation to architecture and the city. The work consists of two distinctive chapters that set individual lines of discussion following an introductory chapter that is a survey of historiographic context regarding the topic and followed by a conclusive chapter to map and restructure the problematiques presented in the chapters. The first chapter sets a general frame as an introduction to the thesis where the related literature, the scope of the subject and objective are defined. The second chapter titled as ?Anchoring Measure? sets the first of vector of change regarding metrology with two subtitles. The first subtitle aims a brief account of Ottoman metrology to map the frame of mind for the traditional or pre-modern understanding of metrology in the Ottoman land as an attempt to mark the transitional nature of arşın (cubit) as both the tool and the measuring unit in a socio-cultural context that demands no precision. The second subtitle will attemp to present the relational patterns of the Ottoman mind to the metric system after its invention owards the end of 18th century and promulgation by the French throughout the 19th century. The fluctuations of a relatively long history of the metric system will be exposed starting with the year 1840 where the Ottomans were first introduced with the metric system that was followed by the official declaration of the adoption of the metric system in 1869 and prevailed until the the Republican period. The third chapter titled as ?Anchoring Order? aims to expose the mental routes of the putative modern will in formation throughout the nineteenth century to shape the city by focusing on the nizamnames (building regulations), published relatively in short terms. Due to the structure of the thesis, a singular conclusion is not intented. Instead, the fourth and final chapter will propose an assessment of facts presented in the particular lines of discussion.
