Pervious concrete design and investigation of usage in floor paving blocks

Abstract (EN)

Impermeable coatings, which are widely used in cities, may cause water accumulation and flooding by converting precipitation water into surface water flows. Thanks to its connected void content, pervious concrete drains the precipitation water from the surface and transfers it to the ground. Thus, it prevents the formation of surface water flow. Within the scope of this study, pervious concrete coatings with different mix proportions were prepared in the form of paving blocks and evaluated in terms of national and international paving block standards (pbs). The study consists of three stages. First, the effect of aggregates with fines (clay-silt) (awf) and aggregate/cement (a/c) ratio on mechanical and physical properties of pervious concrete were examined. In the second stage, the amount of plasticizer used in the mixture was increased and it was observed that pervious concrete samples were clogged and appropriate a/c ratio without clogging was determined. In the third stage, mechanical, physical properties and abrasion resistance of pervious concrete paving blocks produced by blast furnace slag-cement and coarse-fine aggregate substitution were investigated and the suitability according to pbs was discussed. In conclusion: it was determined that the use of awf significantly reduced the compressive and tensile strength of the pervious concrete, and the a/c ratio used in the mixture significantly affected the mechanical and physical properties of the pervious concrete. At the same time, it has been determined that the compressive strength of the wet pervious concrete is lower than its compressive strength at dry state. In addition, it was observed that blast furnace slag-cement and coarse-fine aggregate substitution improved the mechanical properties of the pervious concrete, but the use of fine aggregate negatively affected the permeability properties. At the end of thesis; proper mix proportions have been proposed for coatings to be subjected to vehicular traffic and pedestrian loads.
