Deinterlacing algorithms and their effects to video quality

Abstract (EN)

Interlacing has been introduced in video signals to reduce signal bandwidth. A majordrawback of the interlaced scanning format on current bright high-resolution displays (PDP,LCD, DLP i.e.) is the line flicker and serration. Several deinterlacing algorithms have beenproposed to reduce these artifacts. In this paper, some of these algorithms are analyzed.In the first section, a historical overview of television systems has been told. After that,the technological changes and the future of television systems have been discussed.In the second section, the basics of television technology have been explained.Luminance and color on different displays, conversions of video to electrical signals and thescanning schemes have been told.In the third section, the definition of deinterlacing and the reasons behind this operationhave been investigated. Benefits, side effects and the problems that occur during deinterlacinghave been explained and its effects to video quality have been discussed in detail.In the fourth and fifth sections, the basic theories and mathematical formulations ofdeinterlacing methods, which are commonly used, have been explained. The advantages anddisadvantages of methods have been pointed out separately. Thus a common understandinghas been provided for comparison.In the sixth section, the simulations of discussed algorithms in MATLAB, the analyzesof these simulations and graphical comparisons have been given. The results of simulationshave been discussed both for mathematical and visual aspects.In the last section, a comparison between algorithms has been done relying onsimulation results.Keywords: Television, interlaced scanning, proggressive scanning, display, LCD, plasma,DLP.JURY:1.
