Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research is to allow students to realize their own carpet designs on the basis of traditional design by taking into consideration the productional, critical, cultural and aesthetic aspects of art education and to contribute to the field of visual arts with findings arrived at through observation, interview and other data collection methods used in the process. In accordance with these key objectives, an art education activity focused on traditional design has been prepared during the research. The activity stage of the research has been carried out with 26 students in the sixth grade in a public secondary school located in the city center of Eskişehir. By using pre-understanding, final understanding, observation and interview methods during the 5 weeks implementation period of the activity stage, findings have been collected through researcher logs in addition to the children drawings, lecture video records and voice records acquired during the implementation week. While in the first week of the activity stage students' definitions regarding carpets such as "home furnishing that is stepped on" were pointing to the functionality of carpet in the final week they used sentences which expressed how they saw the carpet as "an art object" by pointing to the design properties of carpet. According to the findings arrived at the end of the research, it can be said that the activity has contributed to raising the students' awareness on culture, visual culture, carpet, carpet patterns, carpets with animal shapes and design
