Historical buildings are important parts of our cultural heritage. They reflect the sociological, economical, cultural and political elements of the past and the places in which they are situated. They are significant links between the past and the present. Therefore, it is crucial to protect them and pass them on to the next generations.The historical buildings in our country and in the world are not protected as good as it should be. Earthquakes, natural disasters, adverse environmental conditions, physical-chemical decays and causes resulting from human being accelerate the decaying process of these buildings.The aim of this study is to investigate the restoration and strengthening methods which will be applied to protect the historical buildings whose structural systems have been damaged so that they can be passed on to the next generations and to assist the experts working on this subject.In this study,?Kinds of damage seen in historical buildings and their reasons,?Today?s methods used to assess the damage,?Restoration and strengthening methods used in historical buildings have been investigated.In the conclusion part of the study, as a consequence of this investigation and research, the matters which should be done and taken into consideration before intervening an ancient building and during the intervention phase have been summarized.Anahtar Kelimeler : Historical buildings, strengthening, structural problems
