Orientalist discourse in Gelibolu novel

The eastern society has been in communication with the western society in every fields during the history. Today, the orientalists have done the description for "East" and "Easterner" to us, namely to the world from their perspective after they have reviewed the far east society and the near east society's culture and living that are mentioned as orientalism. Similarly, the orientalism complies with the concepts of peculiar idiom for oriental people and oriental science, and it is a result of academic studies that the western people who have reviewed the eastern society have done. The east and west have become the parties which have disagreed in the religious, historical and cultural fields in the continuous wars during the history. Especially, the western travelers and wise persons have constantly criticized and they have constantly mentioned insultingly, they reflected themselves, namely the west as those to illuminate the modern and as civil ones. The struggle and conflicts which have been seen between the east and west during the history form a basis to the orientalists after the western society has the general knowledge on the eastern society especially as they open the fields such as " Arabian culture and East science" related to The Eastern societies in the universities in their universities. The orientalists have generally prejudged on The Eastern society and culture in the field of literature like in the other fine arts, they stated them with the concepts such as " bigot, uncultured, rude, uncivilised and primitive", the eastern people fell behind, and they mentioned them as barbaric societies. When we consider the society, the place where the civilization occurs is The East exactly. The Muslim scholars and scientists who live in many countries in The East have provided many discoveries and innovations in the world's history with their important discoveries, and they have initiated to The West in the development. While the middle age's Europe and western world lived under the impact of church and in the poverty with the fights for thrones to 16. and 17. centuries, the eastern civilizations provided the important developments for the man, and they created the new commercial centers and they had a voice over the world. Especially, the west got advance in the science after the events following The New Era, namely the age of enlightenment, and they have had a voice in many fields over the world up to now. The following manners are that The West created a percept of back east on the world that; it didn't accept that The East leaded the innovations and it had an orientalist approach on The Eastern societies and cultures. We can say that it was provided that the western societies overtowered consciously by this means. The orientalists are frequently seen in the novels such as in the fields of theater, literature and cinema. The orientalist comments of western authors and philosophers on the eastern societies attract the attention in the novels as the other fields. These comments are mostly subjective. The Ottoman wise persons who were mixed up in The West and East were mostly seen in the novels from the period of Reforms. Today's authors have the works about this subject. The western authors determined the orientalist approaches against The West and the percept of 'East'. Edward W. Said revealed this subject with the determinations that he provided on the orientalism, and especially his criticism on the western people's orientalist approach with an objective approach made the tremendous impact over the world. Actually, the goal of this thesis to search the orientalism and orientalist statements is that the western authors, philosophers and the orientalist statements which have been the party of west in Turkish novels from the past have aimed the societies and cultures from The East on the base of Islam, and it is that the deliberate perception operations and orientalist statements which have been done on Muslims and the eastern societies are determined. The study consists of six main sections. The concept of orientalism has been considered in The Section I, the beginning and development of the concept of Orientalism have been considered in The Section II. The reasons and tools of orientalizm have been considered in The Section III. The studies related to Orientalism and Islam have been considered in The Section IV. The literature that Orientalism has an impact on it has been considered in The Section V. The Section VI, as the main section of study considered the statement of Orientalist in The Novel of Gelibolu.
