Validity and reliability studies of the Turkish versions of the growth mindset and implicit theories of personality scales

The aim of this study was to develop Turkish versions of two scales measuring Growth Mindset and Implicit Theories of Personality within the framework of mindset theory, and to examine the validity and reliability of these forms. Accordingly, the Growth Mindset Scale and the Implicit Theories of Personality Scale were adapted into Turkish and their psychometric properties were tested on two independent samples of adults aged 18–65 (N = 201, N = 211). The factor structures of the scales were examined in terms of construct validity. Findings indicated that the Growth Mindset Scale had a single-factor structure, whereas the Implicit Theories of Personality Scale exhibited a two-factor structure. Parallel analysis results showed that the single factor of the Growth Mindset Scale explained 72.2% of the total variance, while the first and second factors of the Implicit Theories of Personality Scale accounted for 46% and 17.7% of the variance, respectively. These results demonstrate that the factor structures and the constructs measured by the items were confirmed for the Turkish versions of the scales. Internal consistency analyses revealed Omega coefficients of .89 and .92 and Cronbach's Alpha coefficients of .88 and .92 for the Growth Mindset Scale across the two samples. For the Implicit Theories of Personality Scale, Omega coefficients were .84 and .88, and Cronbach's Alpha coefficients were .86 and .88. Additionally, inter-item correlations were high, supporting the overall integrity of the scales. This study makes a significant contribution to the field by increasing the number of valid and reliable measurement tools available for assessing mindset constructs in Turkish culture. The adaptation of two scales with similar theoretical foundations within the same research context represents a distinctive strength of this study.
