The examination of the family quality of life perceptions of mothers who have children with disabilities

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to examine family quality of life perceptions of mothers who have children with disabilities in Turkey. The research group consists of four participant groups who have children with developmental disabilities. In this research ?casual comparative model? is used. In the process of linguistic equalince, the data is gathered from 31 parents and in the process of pilot study/face validity, the data is gathered from 31 mothers. In the process of validity and reliability of Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale, the data is gathered from 368 mothers. At last, to research the percection of family quality of life and relevent predictive relations, the data is gathered from 3009 mothers who have children with disabilities in Education and Intervention Schools and Autistic Children Education Centers in Turkey.The data were collected by using Socio-demografic Family Information Form for socio-demografic datas, Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale (BSFQOLS) for family quality of life perceptions of mothers who have children with disabilities, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) for criterion validity and Family Supports Scale for social support datas.It is observed that, the Turkish Form of BCFQOLS can be used as a reliable and valid assessment tool to assess Family Quality of Life of parents of indviduals with developmental disabilities in Turkey.It is determined that the family quality of life and sub-domains perceptions of mothers who have children with developmental disabilities is higher than avarage while highest perception in `family interaction? sub-domain and lowest perception in `physical/material/financial? sub-domain were found.In the prediction of family quality of life and sub-domains perceptions of mothers, it is observed that the variable which mostly explaines total variance is family social support. It is seen that family income, socio-economic status (SES), the age of children with developmental disabilities and type of children disability the ability to prediction of family quality of life and sub-domains perceptions of mothers are weak. However, it is determined that family income is a more important prediction factor than family social support while explaining total variance in physical/material/financial well-being sub-domain.
